Chris Firger—July 21-August 3, 2023
Provincetown, MA: The Alden Gallery will present a solo show of new work by Chris Firger, opening on Friday, July 21, 2023, at 423 Commercial St. The artist’s reception will be on opening day, Friday, July 21, from 7 to 9 p.m. The show will be on view through August 3.
Chris Firger was born in Haverhill, Mass., in 1989 and chose the artist’s life after working several frustrating years in the corporate world. He had always been drawing as a kid, but is largely self-taught as a painter, with the help of workshops and feedback from local art associations. Since he made the switch in professions, he has risen quickly in skill and reputation, largely inspired by early 20th-century Canadian artists known as the Group of Seven, who were modern realists. “I went to college in Canada, at McGill University in Montreal, and my wife is Canadian,” Firger says. “The Group of Seven brought this grandiose, bold approach to the landscape — taking what you love about what you’re seeing and pushing it.”
His studio is now in Salem, Mass., and he is thrilled to be showing in Provincetown. He had stayed on the Cape with his family every summer growing up and is eager to paint images of life here from the local point of view. After showing in Eastham and a pop-up in Provincetown, he joined the Alden Gallery this year.
“In my approach to painting, I utilize clean lines and intentional edits to simplify scenes and emphasize certain elements that I find interesting, unexpected, or important,” Firger says. “I often push color and contrast beyond the ‘observed,’ bringing a heightened sense of energy and life to each piece. My work invites the viewer to create their own narrative about a given place or moment in time — layering their own experience on top of the image I put in front of them. My ultimate goal as an artist is to inspire others to reconnect with, appreciate, and protect the natural world and the communities around them.”
The Alden Gallery is open daily, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., and Wednesday through Saturday evenings, 6-9 p.m., through Labor Day, after which it will be open weekends through New Year’s Day, 2024. It is free and open to the public. During gallery hours, call 508-487-4230; off-hours, call 646-483-8164.
