statement
The things we see and how we see them are filtered — and obscured — through the prism of emotions that are evoked by past and present experiences. Add to that context the abstraction of light and color, and you will perceive the world as I do, as a painter.
With all those layers affecting how I see, it’s impossible for me to fully explore an image as only one surface. But if the painted surface and several under-layers can be taken in simultaneously in my work, then it begins to express my vision and process.
The paintings I’ve made over the last year are an exciting departure for me from previous work. The addition of cold wax medium, mixed into the oil paint and then stressed with heat, adds an unexpected depth and layering to the work. The top surface, the image at hand, is then obscured, revealing some of the rich under-painting, and allowing my way of seeing to become part of the final image.
